What should an AI website actually do for your business?

An AI website should make something easier for your customer or your team. A chat window alone is not a strategy. Before choosing a tool, decide where visitors get stuck and what a better experience would look like.

Start with one useful job

Write a simple brief: “Our visitors need help choosing the right service” or “Our team repeatedly answers the same booking questions.” This gives your website a clear purpose and helps you evaluate whether an AI feature is worth building.

For a service business, the first useful feature might be an assistant that explains service options using approved information. For another business, a guided enquiry form with clear choices may solve the problem without AI at all.

Keep the website foundations strong

Your service pages, navigation, contact details and mobile experience still matter. Visitors should be able to understand your offer and reach you without using a chatbot. Write clear page copy, give each page a purpose and make the next action easy to find.

Think of AI as an additional route through the website. It should support your core content rather than hide it behind a conversation.

Choose the information your assistant can use

Prepare a small, maintained knowledge source: service descriptions, business hours, approved FAQs and the steps for requesting a quote. Identify who owns each answer and how it will be updated.

Decide what the assistant must not answer. Custom quotes, promises about delivery and sensitive customer information may need a team member. A useful fallback is better than a confident guess.

Plan the handoff

When a visitor is ready to talk, collect only the details needed to continue. Explain what will happen next. A contact form can save the enquiry, notify the appropriate people and create a task in your CRM.

If an integration fails, the enquiry should remain available. Ask your developer how failures are logged, who receives alerts and how the team can retry a missed action.

Account for ongoing costs

Separate the initial build from hosting, platform subscriptions, AI usage and maintenance. Ask what happens if a usage limit is reached. Agree on who will review conversations, update information and monitor the system.

Test with real questions

Before launch, try routine questions, unclear requests and questions outside your scope. Test on a phone. Check that a visitor can bypass the assistant and speak to a person.

Start with a focused release, then review the quality of enquiries and the questions visitors ask. At Shivah Web Tech, we can help define a practical website and AI integration around your business. Tell us what you want your website to do.
